Gong De Lin is an 80+ year old Shanghai vegetarian restaurant which underwent major renovations a few years ago (we still remember the old place), and it looks pretty good now. Yes, Gong De Lin is vegetarian, but it's really interesting. The "fake meat" is quite amazing, especially if you've never tried it. They make certain dishes look and taste like non-vegetarian food items. We were particularly amused by the eerie-looking chicken feet. But equally un-attractive (at a normal restaurant) items were present on the menu, too, such as pig bowels, etc. Gong De Lin is a great experience, at least once, simply to be impressed by how clever people are at making meat substitutes. It makes you wonder... why do we have to destroy animals to eat meat?
